"content_html": "

Waarom gemeenten juist Tygron gebruiken

Contactinfo:

Jonathan van Ekris, Adviseur Klimaatadaptatie & Stedelijk Water bij BOOT

https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanvanekris/
",

",

            "content_html": "

Innovatieve oplossing: RCNN-gebaseerde data-analyse

State-of-the-art AI-technieken, zoals Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks (RCNN), bieden een oplossing.

Op basis van het stappenplan (How to train your own AI model for an Inference Overlay – Tygron Preview Support Wiki), kan je je eigen AI-model trainen.

Figuur 3 De traditioneel gebruikte topografische kaart

These grid cells then be used in the simulation models in a very efficient way and the results can be visualized as an overlay.

Left: Heat Stress calculation Right: 4 billion grid cell water calculation on 60x60km map

For a simulation to become accurate enough you need small grid cells, e.g. when a waterway is 2 meters wide you cannot use a grid-cell that is 10×10 meters, that would effectively average out the waterway. Typically a grid-cell size between 0,5m – 2m is enough for most GEO based simulations.

On the other hand you also want to perform calculations on a large area. For example, a calculation of a flooding running for many kilometers, or heat stress impact calculations for a hot summer day for multiple cities in a single run.

These two requests combined drive the ever growing need for more grid cells in our simulation models. To facilitate future expansions, we have updated our GPU backbone last weekend to tackle some of the challenges when up scaling from 1 billion (1.000.000.000) grids cells in the current LTS release to 4 billion and beyond.

Addressing: The Tygron Platform is developed in Java and unlike C arrays are defined using 32 bit signed integers. Since 1 bit is lost to signed (plus or minus) 2^31 can be used, resulting in a max array length of approx 2 billion. To overcome this we are no longer using arrays but matrices instead to store the grid data. The simulation code is written in CUDA (a C derivative from NVIDIA) and there we switched to using unsigned integers, allowing simulations with 4 billion grid cells.

Memory: Next challenge is memory usage. Most simulation models use multiple variables per grid cell. For example a hydrogical simulation has variables such as water height, flux x, flux y, roughness values, infiltration speeds, terrain height, etc. When you combine that with having 4 billion grid cells and requiring double precision accuracy, you would need 2^32 * 64 bit = 32GB just to represent the water height for each grid cell. So for each variable we will ask ourselves: Do we need it? If so, can it be derived from other used values? Or when it is a simple constant like the land roughness value (typically a value between 0-10 max), can it be stored using just 16 bits?

Left: different precision floating point values Right: Typical 8 GPU node cluster

Location: A typical GPU cluster used by Tygron uses eight NVLINK connected NVIDIA V100 Tesla GPUs with 32GB of High Bandwidth Memory. Each V100 has 5120 cores that can calculate lots of data in parallel. However getting the data in the right place it often a bigger challenge. 32GB memory per GPU node seems a lot, but as explained above only a single variable would fill the memory. Therefor you need to efficiently split the data over all nodes resulting in 8×32 = 256GB total or even more when you leave is partly in main memory. To address this Tygron developed a Hybrid Memory System where the Java matrix is automatically splits the data over the available nodes. Per node; part of the memory is local and a border margin is shared with others using CUDA Unified Memory.

Java: To facilitate rapid development we have developed our own Java2CUDA compiler, which allows us to run the same code in the JVM and on the GPU. Obviously, the GPU performance will be much better (see video below). However, by having a near identical setup in Java makes it easier for us to develop and debug new features and integrate it in to our existing unit tests. Daily thousands of test suites run using both Java and GPU implementation. Note that you need to disable FMA (multiply and add) instruction on the GPU to prevent small round off error compared to Java code that does not have a single operation for “multiply and add”.

Azul: Using Java as our primary development language has many advantages. However garbage collection (cleaning up old unused data) becomes a big problem when working with large 4 billion cell grids. During rasterization the total memory usage for a single project can become up to ½ TB of RAM and when the default Java garbage collectors kicks in the system could freeze for several minutes! To counter this, the Tygron Platform recycles much of it large matrices/arrays, reusing an old objects prevents them from being collected. However this was still not enough and the solution was found in a California based company called Azul. Using Zing, their specialized, high performance virtual machine, reduces the garbage collection freezes to bare milliseconds.

So far we have only scratched the surface and each challenge above has many more things that can be explained. When you are interested in more details, please let me know (email: maxim at tygron dot com), as it may become the next blog entry.

Regards,

Maxim Knepfle
CTO Tygron
",

We are thus very exited when a new hardware is released, after seeing the keynote we can conclude the following:

1 The Specs: The A100 compared to the V100 used in many Tygron clusters has made another jump in performance specs.

The amount of CUDA Cores is going up from 5120 to 6912.

The NVLINK connecting it to other GPU’s has increased from 300GB/sec to 600GB/sec.

Memory bandwidth from 900GB/sec to 1600GB/sec.

This means that when we add a new cluster to the Tygron Platform, without changing any code, the performance gets a significant boost. Resulting in shorter calculations for floodings, heat-stress, noise pollution, etc.

2 Tensor Cores: However far more interesting are the new Tensor Cores. These special cores allow you to do multiple “multiply and add” calculations (e.g. vector data) in a single call. When you use these efficiently you can increase performance by a factor 10!

Our current generation V100 already has Tensor Cores but they only accept 16 bit numbers which is not precise enough for e.g. flooding calculations and results in an unstable water balance. The A100 changes this by also allowing 32 and 64 bit calculations and can thus boost the “multiply and add” operations dramatically. These are very common throughout our code base.

3 Mellanox Highway: Another interesting development is NVIDIA’s purchase of Mellanox. Mellanox develops very fast network solutions used in many supercomputers, including the Tygron Platform. These supercomputers have multiple clusters (or nodes) connected by hi speed networks to allow for even bigger calculations than a single machine could handle. However the biggest problem in doing so is that you need to have a very fast highway between them, otherwise the GPU-units are just “waiting” all the time for new data to process.

Tygron Supercomputer Clusters

Further integration of NVIDIA’s GPU accelerators, NVLINK and Mellanox networking will most likely result is an even faster highway. For example Mellanox Network cards have DPU‘s (Data Processing Unit) that can further facilitate communication between GPU’s on different machine using e.g. Remote Direct Memory Access.

We are looking forward trying out this latest GPU in practice and see how it can accelerate our platform!
",

            "content_html": "
Scenario

It often starts with an early warning. For example, during a levee inspection, a severe crack in the levee is found, which can potentially lead to a breach at that location. Or perhaps there is already a breach forming. The user (e.g. a waterboard employee) now needs to do a fast impact assessment of what happens in the next hours and days and, based on several scenarios, inform the emergency services.

1 Create a Project: The Tygron Platform is cloud based and can be accessed from anywhere in the field, at home or in the office. Maybe the user already has a project pre-loaded and he/she can skip this step. Otherwise the user needs to select the impacted area (e.g. the polder). Once a selection has been made, the Tygron Platform will start an automated process in which all the latest Geo data from public sources are combined into a single 3D model of the area.

BRP Crops influences terrain roughness near breach

2 Setup the Breach: After the 3D model is loaded the user needs to define the breach area. This can be done by uploading a polygon of its location or by just drawing the area in the 3D map. Next, the user can add a flooding overlay and setup the parameters for the breach, either a Standard Wave (m3/sec over time) or based on the breach formula (Verheij-vdKnaap).

3 Calculation: Instead of Hyper resolution (<=1x1m) we now select a more modest 5x5m resolution. This allows for very fast results while still retaining much of the elevation map and building obstacles. The user can now run the simulation, or multiple overlays in parallel for different scenarios.

Note: in case of real emergency a user can also get priority access to all GPU clusters available in the Tygron Platform.

Bommelerwaard

Based on these use-case steps I did some tests on the Bommelerwaard on how fast you can get results on a 5x5m resolution. During project creation only the relevant data was loaded, where the elevation map was set at 2.5m.

So for the Bommelerwaard we can create a detailed project based on the latest Geo-data and do a flood impact simulation in under half an hour. Iterating on this we could now also try different scenarios (different breach location or taking preventive measures) and do a 7 min recalculation.

Comparison

First we compared the results of the 5x5m model with results from the previous 1x1m run. Here you can see that on the larger rural planes the flow pattern is almost identical. Also the time it takes for full flooding of the polder and final water depth is roughly the same.

Flow pattern for 5m and 1m

Depth after 4 days at 5m and 1m

Between buildings the 5x5m model has less flow. Whether or not this is a problem depends on the situation. When the water mainly flows through small streets this is a problem, however in the Bommelerwaard case most area is flat rural and the water can easily flow around and will eventually “surround” villages. The TU Delft study also confirmed that different grid sizes does not severely impact the amount of expected casualties in this specific case.

In case of a large metropolis getting flooded, I do expect that there will be a significant impact on e.g. the arrival time!

Breach flow pattern 5m and 1m

Next we did a preliminary comparison with a traditional CPU simulation model. For the Bommelerwaard there is already a study done by the TU Delft using D-Flow Flexible Mesh. Comparing models is always a bit tricky, so this must be viewed only as a rough estimate, with some remarks:

The D-Flow FM model uses a 5x5m resolution near the breach and 20x20m resolution in the rest of the map (80%). However D-Flow FM also uses a flexible mesh, so I expect D-Flow FM results to be better at 5x5m resolution, however 80% of the flooding is done less accurate at 20x20m.

Comparing the results, we see the same final flooding depth (difference is only a few centimeters). The average flow patterns around breach, underpass and central highway are also similar.

Calculation core: both models use a finite volume schema to solve the st-venant equations.

The D-Flow FM calculation was done on a pre-release version, so I also expect the final product to be faster.

There is no data available about how long it takes to Create & Setup the D-Flow FM model, so we only compared the Calculation step.

Since after 4 days the entire Bommelerwaard is flooded, we are only interested in the first 4 days. In the TU Delft study 12 days are simulated in 7.1 days (chapter 5.5 page 89), thus 7.1/3 = 2.4 days.

This is only a preliminary result and certainly needs additional testing on which I would very much like to collaborate with other researchers, so feel free to contact me.

However, I do think we can say that GPU Supercomputers are significantly faster at solving the (st-venant) equations then traditional CPU machines. Which is also the main reason why a most of the Top 10 fastest supercomputers in the world are GPU based.

Can we go faster?

1 Software: Last year we made several improvements to the underlying algorithms, data management and compiler optimizations. This resulted in ~30% speed increase.

2 Hardware: GPU power increases steadily every year and recently we have started testing the next generation Ampere GPU’s from NVIDIA. From these tests we can conclude:

Ampere is out-of-the-box 2x faster then the previous Volta generation for Tygron. This mainly due to; faster memory, faster interconnect NVLINK, improved management and a much bigger L2 cache. Also double precision floating point (64 bit) operations have increased by a factor of 2.5.

Ampere now also supports 64 bit Tensor Cores. Using these special cores you can do matrix multiplications in one single call. This does require however that we rewrite part of the algorithms, but if successful might also yield an additional ~2x speed increase.

At the moment the Ampere GPU is for small scale testing only. Later this year I hope to re-run of the Bommelerwaard and we also expect to start using them in the production environment (available to all users).

",

The Geul is almost 60 kilometers in length with many more side streams. It starts in Belgium just below Aachen and has several smaller side rivers. The map generation is an automated process which uses public data sources to create a detailed project containing millions of GEO features:

Visualization of DEM in the Geul catchment area

Heightmap: AHN in the Netherlands, in Belgium the world elevation map from ESRI is used.

Buildings & Infrastructure: BGT, BAG, CBS, Top10NL, NBW in the Netherlands and OpenStreetMaps in Belgium.

Terrain: Rivers, crop fields, woodlands etc. from BGT, BRO, Top10NL , BRP in the Netherlands and again OpenStreetMap data for Belgium.

Hydraulic structures: e.g. culverts from the Waterschapshuis Information model.

Variables like ground infiltration speed or manning roughness values are determined based on geo information. For example a grid cell with cobblestone road (BGT, NBW) on sand (BRO) and some corn fields (BRP) on the side has a unique value.

We decided to simulate three days, of which the first two days contained the heaviest showers.

Rainfall is measured daily at several KNMI weather stations in Limburg. These were remapped to 100 tiles containing the rainfall sum of each day using a script.

Evaporation was very low (less then 1 mm), the daily Makkink value was retrieved from the KNMI station in Maastricht.

Groundwater. Although groundwater flow (included in the simulation) is minimal, having some information about the storage capacity of the underground is important. To gain some insight we used the historic data available at Waterstandlimburg.

Validation

After the setup process was completed we compared the simulated results with several sources.

Flooding maps from satellite imagery. These can be very useful to check if the water was outside the river bedding. We used data from the Sentinel satellite provided via Deltares & Earth Engine.

Flooded field near Wijlre Left Sentinel Right Tygron, note that the Tree in the middle is not flooded in Sentinel image, red circle for Tygron, this is most likely due to woodland distortion, since the elevation below the tree is identical to the surrounding area.

We did however also find several places that were flooded according to the simulation but did not show up in the satellite imagery. This might be explained woodlands that distort the imagery or because the flooding is very short and the satellite was not in orbit at that moment? We investigated a few of the locations. For example restaurant The Geulhof near Meerssen did not show up on satellite imagery, but was actually flooded according to local newspaper 1Limburg.

Restaurant De Geulhof

Water level (m) measurements from Waterstandlimburg. This website provides excellent water level measurements at 20+ point along the Geul and side streams.

These calculated values are all within a margin of +/-30cm from the measured data in the main Geul valley. Note that in many places like Valkenburg, the Geul reached more then 300cm above the regular level.

We did see some bigger NAP differences near the Belgium border but this is related to how the river bedding is setup, looking at the relative level increase (max level – bedding) Slenaken and Cottessen are also within 30cm margin.

Finally maybe the best validation is done on the measured flow (m3/sec) at the exit point of the Geul near Meerssen.

Comparing the flow over time you see the same trend line, Tygron starts lower on the first day and compensates on the second. I have tested a few variables and I think the most likely explanation is inaccurate rainfall data. But overall the total sum of water (area below graphs) that flows trough the Geul is within a ~10% margin of what was measured.

Improvements

An important reason to model this event was to learn from it so we can do better next time. The biggest challenges we encountered were all related to data quality, which is especially important when using a high detail model in short time periods. We where able to resolve some of these issues and other still require manual checking and maybe better data in the future.

Automated Bridge correction, lowers AHN elevation 3 meters below the bridge

Bridges are loaded from the BGT data as buildings and the water model uses terrain height below the bridge so the water can flow under it. However we encountered several places where the terrain elevation (not surface) has a bump below bridges, thus jamming the water flow. To resolve this we added a new advanced option that lowers the height map of the river below bridges to the lowest point under or near the entrance of the bridge. In most cases this provides a very stable flow under bridges and if needed users can still upload more detailed river bedding heightmaps.

Thousands of hydraulic structures are loaded automatically and as far as we could see there were non missing. However many did not have all the required attributes, for example the width/height of culverts is not always present. Tygron uses a fallback value, which is fine for smaller culverts, but not for bigger culverts below the the highway and Juliana canal, these needed manual fixing.

The Tygron platform currently uses an data-set from the Waterschapshuis Information-model which is more complete for the Limburg region than what is provided HyDAMO → PDOK at the moment. Water authorities are very busy at improving the data quality, so maybe over time this will resolve itself.

Finally the rainfall is now based on a daily sum from the different KNMI weather station, roughly interpolated between them. But the heavy showers can be very local, thus combining it with radar data might further improve the result. Tygron supports localized temporal showers and these can be imported using custom scripts, but maybe an automated API connection, that can be used as early warning system would be better!

Final Remarks

We were able to gather large amounts of public data, calculate the entire 60km long river catchment area at very high detail using our GPU Supercomputer and ending up with results fairly close to the measured data. Also changing some variables (e.g. culvert width or groundwater depth/flow) did not significantly change the end result.

Finally I would still recommend to have local knowledge and expertise about the watersystem. This in combination with better data sources can certainly further improve the results.
",

            "content_html": "
In this blog I describe how we were able to incorporate this concept and thereby reduce the total calculation time of multiple jobs up to 80%.

Why is this interesting for us?

At Tygron we have spent a lot of time optimizing the performance of a single job, e.g. a flooding or heat-stress simulation. However in the end it is not always possible the keep the GPU 100% busy.

For example a GPU Cluster can do 40.000 calculations in parallel, which is perfect when you are calculating 10 million grid cells in a flooding simulation. But in the next phase this simulation is also processing the water objects (weirs, culverts, etc) and you might only have 10.000 objects causing throughput to drop to 25% usage. This becomes even worse when a cluster has multiple GPUs working on the same single job and not all of them have the exact same workload. They now have to wait (0% usage) on each other to finish before advancing to the next time step.

Figure: Red area is unused GPU capacity

* Although it is certainly possible to further optimize single job-calculations (e.g. by breaking it up into smaller parts), why not also create multiple contexts and let another job use this unused capacity? This will not speed up single jobs but when doing two or more jobs simultaneously the total execution time is reduced because the throughput beast is better fed!

* This is of special importance for Tygron as we see a continuous increase in the amount of simulation jobs done on our platform, about 100.000 jobs where processed last year. This can lead to a situation where users sometimes have to wait for a long running job to finish before their own job can be scheduled. Especially during live-sessions or emergencies, where the Tygron platform is used to immediately calculate effects of changes to an area, this is not welcome. Therefore there is also a need to prioritize jobs and sometimes temporarily scale back the amount of GPU capacity for low priority jobs.

Updates

These two requirements resulted in the following architectural updates:

1 Multi Context: A Tygron GPU Cluster now has multiple contexts that can be used for simulation jobs. Each context has dynamically allocated memory based on the job size. This allocation is constantly synchronized with the central platform scheduler so two contexts can never ask for more memory then available on the GPUs.

2: Multi-Process Service: Using the NVIDIA Multi-Process Service (MPS) a hardware based GPU scheduler is also activated. This scheduler maps the two contexts into a single one that will then be optimally executed by the GPU’s processing cores. This also means no overhead due to context switching.

Figure: MPS Scheduler service running 3 jobs

3 Priority: Tygron simulation jobs now also have a priority that is given to the GPU’s stream. The MPS uses this value to allocate resources to parallel running jobs. Long running jobs automatically have a lower prio and you can also adjust the default priority by adding a PRIORITY attribute to an overlay.

4 Small Jobs: When running small jobs on e.g. an 8 GPU cluster the overhead of communicating between GPUs is bigger than the advantage of having 8 devices. Therefore the amount of devices allocated for the job is automatically reduced to e.g. 2 out of 8. The other 6 can now also be used again for other small jobs.

Using these architectural updates we can see increases ranging from e.g. 30% reduction in total simulations time when executing two jobs. But also up to 80% when a lot of smaller jobs are executed (note: although Tygron can evaluate billion of grid cells, most jobs only have a couple of million).

Figure: Multiple jobs finish faster then before

Available in July

At the moment of writing the new architecture is working on the development server and will go into the testing phase. Using 32-bit values occasionally leads to a phenomenon known as Catastrophic Cancellation.

Catastrophic Cancellation occurs when significant digits are lost in numerical calculations due to poor choices of arithmetic methods, especially when adding numbers with a large difference, resulting in a less accurate outcome. In our case “leaking” water volumes.

Example of Catastrophic Cancellation

Consider two 32-bit numbers: 1000 and 0,00001

When you add them together: 1000 + 0,00001 = 1000

Instead of yielding the correct 1000,00001, this operation results in a smaller and less accurate value, which over many iterations comprises numerical stability..

Solutions from the Past

To tackle this issue, we revisited older works by William Kahan, winner of the famous Turing Award (“Nobel Prize of Computing”) for his contributions to numerical analysis. In the 1960s and 1970s, computing power was limited and expensive, prompting Kahan to develop algorithms to compensate in summations. But later also differences in products, for instance: 33962.035 * -30438.8 – 41563.4 * -24871.969 in 32-bit yields an incorrect result.

* Language-independent; this issue occurs in: Python, C++, Java, etc.

Using Kahan’s Algorithm solves this issue, but requires a Fused Multiply-Add (FMA) operations, which are not available on most CPUs. However, GPUs do support FMA, allowing for the correct implementation of the algorithm.

Integration and Testing
The next step involved integrating these new algorithms into the Water Module while ensuring that the answers remained consistent. Our development process, rooted in principles from David Farley’s Modern Software Engineering, has led us to create thousands of unit tests over the years for a variety of water simulations; including floods, rainfall, lakes and many more.

Through a test-driven development approach, we modified small parts of the original code to include Kahan’s algorithms. We iteratively ran the amended code against all unit tests to verify stability. After several iterations (including some dead ends) we successfully solved most of the Saint Venant equations using 16-bit and 32-bit operations that produced results identical to those of the original 64-bit.

Installing a new RTX 6000 Server in our datacenter

Performance Gains
A few months later, we proudly welcomed our first RTX PRO 6000 Server, smashing records with an astonishing performance of over 1.000.000.000.000.000 (Peta FLOPS) floating-point operations per second!

After further testing on our Preview Server, we can now confidently state that our Watermodule, along with all other simulations, maximize the use of 32-bit (or lower) operations, leading to remarkable performance gains:

Hardware upgrade: 2x faster

Software upgrade: 2x faster

Total performance gain: 4x faster*

* In some cases, such as heatwave calculations, performance gains can reach 6 to 8 times faster.

Together with the enhanced memory capacity of the new GPUs, these improvements establish a robust foundation for the Tygron Platform, offering users faster high-precision results and a broader range of possibilities!
",

            "content_html": "
Our latest experiment was to do a hyper resolution (<=1x1m grid) flooding simulation of the Bommelerwaard, a river island surrounded by levees, situated in the Netherlands. We started by selecting the area and the software automatically loaded in several the public open data sources (BAG, AHN, BGT, BRP, CBS, etc). Then we only added a breach location triggering the flooding below.

Flooding progress created with new Tygron GIF exporter

This month we have also added support for CityJSON (and CityGML). So this experiment also proved to be an ideal case to test the latest 3D Geo Data made available by the Delft University geoinformation group.

3D BAG data in 3D world and part of the flooding surface model

Thus in order to further refine the experiment, we incorporated the following features into the Tygron Platform:

CityJSON: The Tygron Platform already supports uploading your own data using the I3S format from Esri. However, we also wanted to support CityJSON, the successor of CityGML. It is widely used and supported by many applications and proves to be a very nice format with strict definitions for all building components. In the future we consider taking advantage of these components and additional meta data (e.g. addresses) provided in the format. Since it is a Geo format we did have to add triangulation (Delaunay) of the surfaces to visualize the data. Support for import and export is planned in the near future. The detailed CityJSON data is also used in the surface model of the flooding simulation.

3D World based on a combination of 3D BAG, BGT, AHN, BRP, Top10NL, CBS, Risk Map is flooded.

Modular Compilation: Over the years the water module has massively grown for different use-cases like floodings, year round groundwater or urban rainfall, with 37 different result overlays available. From the start we decided to create a single system that can calculate all these components and also support the combination of these elements (e.g. flood combined with rainfall and evaporation). However, most use-cases only use a fraction of what is possible, therefor we added a modular compilation system that allows the CUDA compiler to create specifically optimized PTX instructions for different combinations. This results in more compilation variants but the execution time for end-users was reduced on average by 20%.

Data Flow: Not only execution time is relevant, but also the amount of data (many GB’s) that flows inside the platform between the CPU based project servers and GPU clusters needed to be reduced. To accomplish this we improved this flow by adding new components like a Null-pointer implementation that is recognized in both Java and our C++ code bases. We also changed the way a GPU cluster is selected, no longer on the amount of grid cells but on an estimate of the required bytes. For example, a big 4 billion grid cells calculation with only a few variables per cell can now also be executed on a smaller GPU cluster, thus adding more capacity to the platform.

This part was also calculated at a higher 0.5m resolution

Combo Language: Earlier this year we introduced the Combo Overlay as a BETA that allows user to create their own formula-based calculation to grid data. From the start this was a big success and we saw many different applications. For the Bommelerwaard we used the combo to calculate the “Mortality function” as described in the SSM2017 definition. This allowed us to also add some new functionalities like the error function (ERF), IF statements and improved handling of NO_DATA cells. The Combo calculation core was also parallelized, reducing the calculation time from minutes to just a few seconds.

Hydraulic Object verification: When calculating an area the size of the Bommelerwaard, thousands of hydraulic structures, such as culverts, are automatically loaded into the project using the IMWA database. This improves the water flow in the water system, but only if the objects are placed correctly in relation to the waterways. For example, a culvert should exit in the middle of the adjacent waterway and not somewhere in the shoreline or below the surface. To correct this we have added ~100 checks to verify the correctness of hydraulic structures and provide direct feedback to the end-user. In most cases we will even provide a suggested fix for all objects at once. For example a weir that has a different height (or missing value) then the upstream water area can be adjusted automatically based on this information.

Approx 3 meter (out of 4 max here) flooding shows only upper levels & roofs remain visible

New Components:

Two new water overlay results have been added; one that stores the flood arrival time and one that stores the water rise speed. These are needed to calculate the mortality of the flooding but can also be used to determine new and evaluate existing evacuation options.

A new attribute that stores the datum level at entry/exit point of every hydraulic structure. These can then be easily exported using the API / Geo software and are also visualized in the 3D world.

A Water area visualization (internally called the “spider”) that can provide additional inside in how the water flows in a complex water system.

Using these new features we were able to properly calculate the flooding of the Bommelerwaard at 1x1m resolution and calculate the amount of fatalities using the SSM2017 method inside the Tygron Platform. We ended up with almost identical results compared to earlier studies done by the Delft University. Which is to be expected for a flat rural area, we also did some experiments in urban areas and there you need small cells for the water to flow around the buildings, trees and infrastructure.

Mortality function based on SSM2017 and possible fatalities per house

Finally the way SSM2017 calculates the mortality can be significantly improved (e.g. by using the arrival time and defining safe areas), which is already available in the Tygron Platform. I would love to do some additional research into this together with other researchers and end-users to come up with a better method that can be easily calculated. Maybe in the next blog entry I can share some of these findings and more details about the flooding simulation itself!
",

When simulating river flow you only need the river polygon and a margin of X kilometers surrounding it for overflow. This also means that when doing a river simulation a large part of the project map will not be active (no water in the cells). To prevent the GPU from loading the data from memory specific CUDA Blocks can be deactivated. While the deactivation of these cells is done at a very small performance penalty, the performance-increase overall is much higher.

Graphs: Large simulations do not only contain a large amount of grid cells but due to the explicit nature of our parallel calculation model also a many time-steps to comply with the CFL condition. A typical simulation can have millions of time-steps with for each step 80+ kernel launches over multiple GPU’s. However each kernel launch results in a small overhead to startup. To make this more efficient we now use CUDA Graphs which was recently introduced by NVIDIA. Graphs are specifically designed for time-step based simulations and takeaway most of this overhead.

Streaming launches: To make the graphs even more efficient we launch batches of 10.000 graphs into a CUDA Stream. When the simulation reaches the endpoint we stop launching new graphs. When the endpoint is halfway a 10.000 batch, the kernels are notified and just do nothing. The overhead of some unused kernel launches is far less than waiting for each single graph to execute.

Graph launches a set of kernels into a stream

River Weirs & Inlets: To simulate the flow of water into the river and exiting into the sea we have introduced a new area based inlet/outlet. When e.g. 3000m3/s of water flow into the river this amount can be spread over a larger area, thus creating a stable input flow by not dumping it all on one single cell. The same principle can now also be used for large river weirs. Depending on the weir width multiple cells are used to take in water on one side and releasing it on multiple cells on the other side.

Left: Old weir flow centered around a single cell bottleneck Right: In the new simulation model the weir in more stable across entire length

The major river experiment worked, but also resulted in many new challenges. Water flows through the rivers, but we did not jet include all the detail about the river weirs in the entire Netherlands. But also for example the amount of zoom levels in the Tygron client software was inadequate and the memory requirements for the client application (not server cloud) are very high.

Waal river speed with detailed inset from same project

However I think by pushing the limits of the system we will find these bottlenecks faster and we can solve them all over time.
